As a network administrator of an IT department in a military institution, some of the data that I have worked with involves very sensitive information. Unfortunately, this information is passed around between offices and some of the top officials are concerned on how the information is safeguarded from hackers. The shift of the institution from a paper-based office to an institution that relies on the movement of data using computer networks had generated this major concern, and that is, the security of very sensitive data.

They consulted me to come up with a proposal that will address this immediate need. Indeed, part of my proposed solution to the issue above is to educate the personnel of the institution with the tools used to safeguard data, and train these personnel on when and how to use these tools properly.

One of the important tools to prevent files from being retrieved is the
File Shredder. The site itself lists down some popular file shredders as a recommendation. I have evaluated each of these, and decided to use the most applicable software application for the institution.

But I have seen that the file shredder in itself is not enough to meet the security needs of the institution. I also picked a Wipe Disk tool to go along with. Just like what I did with the file shredder above, I have picked the most applicable tool and recommended it for use in the institution. The top officials approved both software applications and gave me the go-ahead to expose the awareness of the personnel and train them into using the new software applications.

As of now, the file shredder and wipe disk software applications are now actively used in the institution. Newly hired personnel are now given training on how to use these applications. Newly assigned officers and enlisted personnel are required to take an orientation and training on these tools too. Everyone is always reminded on safeguarding their data by using both tools to minimize leakage of very sensitive information.

Indeed, with the success of the program that I have done above, I was tapped by the Superintendent in my place of work to act as a consultant and a guest speaker to other military offices in our country, carrying the mission of raising awareness in military data security. I usually mention to the audience to visit the site to learn more on the technical vocabulary. I also advised their own IT departments to check out the site and recommend their own file shredder and wipe disk tools that would be applicable to their setting.
